The Impact of Dwight A. Reed on Iowa’s Largest African American Church

Dwight A. Reed is the pastor of Christ Apostolic Temple, the largest African American church in the state of Iowa. He accepted the pastoral leadership in 2017, following the path laid by his father.  Since he became the pastor, Reed has been striving to ensure the church and the community are flourishing. This blog will discuss how he has made an impact by creating programs that will help the community members in need and make the church more accessible to the community.

Background and Leadership Transition

Dwight A. Reed had a strong background that well-prepared him for his leadership role before becoming a pastor. He is an Okmulgee, Oklahoma, native, and he grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, where he attended public schools and pursued courses in theology in preparation for his church involvement.

In 2017, he was appointed bishop of Christ Apostolic Temple when his father, Bishop Jeremiah Reed, passed along the keys of the church. Bishop Dwight has spent the last four years reflecting on his calling. He realized that being a pastor is not meant only for the congregation. It’s not just for church members — it’s for everyone in the community. His vision is to create a place where faith and service co-exist.

Expanding Community Outreach Programs

Christ Apostolic Temple Community Outreach Services (CATCOS), is the cornerstone of Bishop Reed’s community outreach efforts.. This initiative was formed to support those individuals and families in need throughout Des Moines. Since he became the Bishop, CATCOS has developed many sustainable support programs. CATCOS provides a weekly food pantry, diaper distribution, and delivery of food boxes to seniors and residents with disabilities.

With the support of Costco and Wal-Mart, CATCOS distributes fresh food and produce weekly. In addition, it ensures families have access to free school supplies and necessary household items. CATCOS also provides a Holiday Express Program, in which the church becomes a Toys for Tots center by giving away gifts to children. The Homeless Outreach Ministry at CATCOS delivers nourishing meals and essential winter clothing, including coats and socks, to those residing in encampments. Bishop Reed is focused on ensuring no one in the community is forgotten.

A Vision of Faith in Action

The leadership philosophy of Pastor Dwight Reed is based on the idea that ministry must happen on the streets. His practical vision and adaptability have made Christ Apostolic Temple a lighthouse in the community.

Bishop Dwight Reed’s church is no longer a building where we gather on Sunday; it is a resource each day and a living testament to God’s love in action.

In just a few years, Bishop Dwight has honoured the legacy of his father and also built his own. By interwining faith and service, he is continually changing the narrative on what it means to be a pastor and what a church can mean to a city.

Conclusion

Since becoming a pastor in 2017, Dwight A. Reed has given Christ Apostolic Temple more than just the status of the largest African American church in Iowa. With the support of CATCOS and strong community partnerships, he has delivered compassionate, life-changing support to those most in need. His leadership conveys that when faith acts, a church can become a place of worship and a catalyst for community impact.
